Started off with a song that easily become one of my all time favorites from the moment I heard it. James Yuill's This Sweet Love is this beautiful combination of acoustic and electronic. A soft kick underlies the catchy guitar while ambient like melodies and chords sneak their way in to create something truly special.
Acting as a bridge between This Sweet Love and The Birds is Cut Copy's We Fight For Diamonds. A very short but sweet ambient and acoustic hybrid that is quite beautiful despite it's length. It really sets up Telefon Tel Aviv's stunner The Birds. Their are no words to really describe how beautiful this track is. Charles Cooper will be dearly missed, he created beautiful music alongside Joshua Eustis and their music together will always live on. Rest In Peace Charles.
Up next is an old favorite of mine. A track that made a couple of appearances in some older mixes and live sets of mine. Ridgewalkers feat El Find with a very driving and melodic remix from Andy Moor. This came out around the time I was getting into Markus Schulz music, who also did the intro edit for this song.
Another old song I decided to bring back is Michael Burns presents Panoptic with Surface. This song was originally released in 2003 but came back to life after some more well known DJ's began playing out again quite frequently. It's that old progressive sound I truly miss, deep roaring basslines and a heavy focus on a slow building melody. A perfect song to relax on the beach with during a warm summer day.
Following is a recent track that I believe taps into that old progressive sound. I recently lost touch with 16 Bit Lolitas because I felt their music didn't have that energy or feeling it once did but Calling New York really brings back that style they were so great at. Much like Surface it's got a great deep bass and a very beautiful melody that takes its time to build. If more producers took time to take a more subtle and simple approach to their track we would have much better music these days.
I first saw Fergie back in 2001 at Monster Massive. He was once known for being a hard house DJ but crossed into a more techno influenced sound around the time he got his own show on BBC Radio 1. Exit People is his latest release and it really delivers. It's very energetic with a great breakdown that leads right back into a great grooving bassline. I know this will be quite the popular track for sometime.
Beltek has been on quite a roll these last two years. It's not hard to see why. One half of one of my favorite tracks last year Army of Two he now brings us a solo production entitled Belina. This a really warm and energetic summer track. I find myself dancing to this everytime I listen and expect everyone else to do the same. "Like A Star!"
This next track I have an interesting history with. When it was first released Armin Van Buuren was playing this quite a bit but it was only titled as a bootleg remix. For awhile everyone thought it was either Armin Van Buuren or Adam White responsible for the remix. I remember contacting Adam and getting a "No" on his end for being responsible for the track. Rumours went around that Arctic Quest was responsible and I shot an email his way in hopes of figuring it out. He was very kind but said he was playing the track but couldn't disclose who was responsible for it. In due time he was able to tell me that it was indeed him who remixed the track although he ran into some very large legal issues and couldn't get an official release done. He was able to digitally distribute a certain amount of the bootleg copies and eventually re-recorded the track with Anita Kelsey as the vocalist and relabeled it Your Smile. Although Your Smile was a great way to finally get the track out it really is the original bootleg mix that shines. I've always wanted to fit this track into a set but never found proper room for it or a reason until recently. It was a favorite of mine in 2004 when it surfaced and it's responsible for my knowing Emiel (Arctic) who has always been an extremely kind person, he also supported and played out some of my mashups and reconstructions at a series of very large live events and I'll forever be grateful for that. Without further ado I give to you The Cranberries - Shattered the Arctic Quest Remix.
I remember chatting with Mike Mikhjian quite awhile back on myspace after a friend of ours had recommended we check out each others music. Even then he's always had a knack for production and his tracks have very quickly been sought out and played by some of the biggest DJ's in the world. He's always been extremely talented at blending together the best elements from the progressive spectrum of both house and trance. If you haven't already checked out his catalogue of music yet I highly recommend it, you won't be disappointed. This time around I bring to you Everlasting Tales.
Tom Middleton has always been a favorite of mine and his latest CD One More Tune was a great addition to an already impressive lineup of productions. The basis of the CD was to Remodel his favorite end of the night classics to look back on all of those old club and festival moments we've all had at one point or another. This is one of the those rare moments where a remix of an old track not only works but works very well.
Closing everything up is an utterly beautiful track from the always consistent Ben Harper. This track means alot to me. Not just because its beautiful but because Heath Ledger directed the video for the track. He was close friends with Ben and helped him start a label titled Masses Music Co. If you know me well you know how much I looked up to Heath. Theirs not a time that goes by that my heart doesn't hurt when I start to listen to this song but it felt right putting it here and I know everyone will enjoy it.
